How much does Medicare actually cost per month?
The short answer: it depends on you. But we'll walk through the basics so you can understand what factors affect your costs.
The Parts of Medicare—and What They Cost
Medicare has different pieces, and each one carries a different price tag (or no tag at all).
Part A covers hospital care. If you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least ten years, Part A is usually premium-free. You don't write a check every month. If you haven't hit that ten-year mark, you may pay a premium—but the majority of people don't.
Part B is medical insurance (doctor visits, outpatient care, lab work). This one does have a monthly premium that changes annually and adjusts based on your income. The higher you earn in retirement, the more you typically pay.
Part D is prescription drug coverage. Costs vary depending on which plan you choose and which drugs you take. A plan that covers your specific medications will likely cost differently than one for someone else's prescriptions.
Putting It Together: Your Real Monthly Cost
If you have Part A (potentially free), Part B (income-based premium), and Part D (plan-dependent), your total will be specific to your situation.
Many people also add either a Medigap supplement plan or a Medicare Advantage plan.
A Medigap supplement helps cover costs that Medicare Parts A and B don't—copays, coinsurance, deductibles. It has its own monthly premium.
A Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare. It bundles Part A, Part B, and often Part D into one plan with its own monthly cost.
Your total monthly cost depends on:
There's no universal answer because there's no universal situation.
How to Get Your Number
If you're approaching Medicare age or already on it, talking through your options with someone who knows your full picture—your income, medications, doctors, and preferences—is often the clearest path forward.
