Does Medicare cover dental, vision, and hearing?

The short answer is: very little. If you're turning 65 or already on Medicare, it's important to know that Original Medicare has significant gaps when it comes to dental care, vision services, and hearing aids.

What Original Medicare Actually Covers

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers hospital care, doctor visits, and many medical services. But when it comes to routine dental work, vision exams, and hearing aids, you're mostly on your own.

Dental care is almost entirely excluded. Original Medicare won't pay for cleanings, fillings, root canals, dentures, or extractions—even if they're medically necessary. There are rare exceptions for dental work done in a hospital setting due to a medical condition, but these situations are uncommon.

Vision coverage is equally limited. Routine eye exams and eyeglasses are not covered. Medicare will only pay for one pair of glasses after cataract surgery if you choose standard frames. That's it. If you need regular vision correction or new glasses, you'll pay out of pocket.

Hearing aids receive no coverage under Original Medicare. Even though hearing loss is common as we age, the program doesn't help pay for the devices that many people need to stay connected and safe.

Your Coverage Options

Just because Original Medicare doesn't cover these services doesn't mean you're without options.

Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) often bundle dental, vision, and hearing benefits into their coverage. Many plans include an annual dental benefit, vision coverage, and hearing aid allowances. However, the scope of coverage varies widely between plans. Some offer comprehensive benefits; others offer more modest coverage.

Standalone coverage is another route. You can purchase separate dental insurance, vision insurance, or hearing aid coverage that works alongside Original Medicare. This can be useful if you want customized protection or prefer to stay with Original Medicare for your core healthcare.

The key point: don't assume you're covered. Your specific plan determines what you actually get.

Why You Need to Check Your Plan

A common mistake is assuming coverage exists when it doesn't—or paying for services you could have had covered. With dental work, vision exams, and hearing aids all potentially needed as you age, understanding your actual coverage matters for your budget and your health.

If you're in Lee's Summit or the surrounding area and have questions about what your current Medicare plan covers—or whether a different plan might better suit your needs—it makes sense to review your options with someone who knows the details.
